Parents Use the Martial Arts for Back-to-School Excellence
The Martial Arts helps today’s youth
The fall season is traditionally a time when many parents enroll their children into martial arts schools. Why? Because these parents, like thousands of martial arts instructors across America, share the belief that the intangible benefits of the martial arts can cure some of society's ills, especially the problems plaguing our youth today. What parent wouldn’t want to take advantage of an activity that can develop a child's leadership, wisdom and character? Fortunately, parents now have such an activity - the martial arts!
Master Joel Waldron, President of Martial Arts for America, says, “In the martial arts, we are in the business of helping people reach their full potential. Martial art instructors instill wonderful qualities in children where parents and other authority figures often cannot. Because of the respect the instructor has acquired and the highly regarded status symbol of the black belt, the martial arts instructor holds a very important position of influence with students in general, and young students in particular.”
The martial artist can symbolize an ideal role model that young people can hardly find elsewhere - someone physically capable of defending themselves, yet possessing gentle humility. Students usually emulate their instructors. And because students look up to their instructors, more often than not the instructor can motivate them to achieve things the student never thought possible. As a result, many young martial arts students with disciplinary, attention span and academic problems have been transformed into successful achievers. The martial arts are so much more than a mere physical activity. They're a character developing activity.
The Martial Arts are an activity that the entire family can find enjoy together – all year long! According to Master Waldron, “when an entire family trains together, they become a closer and stronger as a family unit. The abundance of the physical benefits derived from the martial arts training is universally recognized all over the world today. Self-defense is, of course, the primary reason why parents want their children to learn the critical skills the martial arts teaches. Increased concentration and self-discipline are the other skills that parents appreciate most about martial arts as an educational supplement for their children.”
Finding the right martial arts school can be extremely hard. Step one in choosing a school is to clearly understand what you want you or your child to gain from learning the martial arts. Is it a light recreation? Then a community center program may suffice. Is it self-defense or personal development? If so, then a full-time professional school will be more suitable. Many parents view the martial arts as part of their child's educational development. With a good professional school, this is very possible. According to Master Waldron, “Don’t just go to the closest or cheapest school in your area. This could be one of the most important and life altering decisions of your life. Being well informed is a major part of the process.”
